ALBANY-SARATOGA SPEEDWAY “ASPHALT ERA” SEGMENT ADDED TO 2024 RACING MEMORIES PROGRAM
The 2024 Racing Memories program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum may well be the best-ever, with a segment recalling the NASCAR asphalt era at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway recently added to the original schedule.
“We don’t really know if the speedway will close in 2025 after some 60 years of racing as announced this summer, but it seems high time to look back to the early days with drivers whose careers started there,” said event organizer Ron Hedger. “We’ll interview a few drivers from that era, recall highlights and rivalries and discuss some of the stars who are no longer with us.”
Drivers on the panel will include Brian Ross, Nick Ronca, Phil Spiak and Jack Halloran.
Set for the traditional “Saturday after Thanksgiving” date, November 30th, the Racing Memories program will feature a wide variety of racing personalities and topics.
“The Motorcycle Guy,” Mark Supley, will do a segment on sidecar motorcycle racing while Area Auto Racing News columnist and racing historian Herb Anastor will discuss Indianapolis 500 winner Roger Ward’s triumph in the Formula Libre race at Lime Rock Park, where Ward topped a bevy of world class sports car racers with Ken Brenn’s Offy midget. As an added attraction, owner Keith Majka will be on hand with the restored Brenn car.
Ken Parrotte will present “Triumph from Tragedy,” a look back at a fire during the Indy 500 that preceded a Johnny Rutherford/Bobby Unser battle for the win. Additionally, Hedger has two interviews on tap, one with promoter Brett Deyo and the other with DIRTcar modified star Demetrious Drellos.
The Saratoga Automobile Museum, located on the Avenue of the Pines in the Saratoga Spa State Park, opens at 10 am. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring memorabilia to share between opening time and 11:45, when the formal program will begin. Display tables will be provided.
“I am moving the start time for the presentations up from past years as we have a full slate and I want to leave time for the audience to interact with our presenters at the conclusion of each segment,” offered Hedger.

The Eastern Motorsport Press Association (EMPA), founded in 1969, is committed to recognizing excellence in motorsports reporting and those who have excelled on the track.
Hedger was inspired to write his first column on track safety more than 40 years ago, after a series of crashes over one summer took the lives of NASCAR modified driving legend Freddy DeSarro and driver Mike Grbac and injured Hedger's brother Randy. Hedger submitted the column to National Speed Sport News (now Speed Sport) under the ownership of the late, legendary Chris Economaki, beginning a colorful career covering the sport.
“We could not be prouder of our very own Ron Hedger being inducted into the EMPA Hall of Fame,” said Megan Hennessey, executive director. “Ron’s contributions to the motorsport industry are prolific, but even more so, his contributions as a board trustee – from providing articles, context of the history of the sport, and volunteering here at the Museum – are immeasurable.”

Ron’s commitment to the motorsport industry is reflective of his volunteer work here at the Museum and we are fortunate to have him among our ranks,” said David DePaulo, board chair.
Hedger joined the Museum as a member during its first year of operation in 2002, becoming a board trustee a few months later.
As past president of EMPA, Hedger is considered one of the best in motorsport journalism, earning a reputation for “fair and unbiased reporting” of the sport for years, providing those who race or who spectate a detailed and descriptive account of races, profiles, and news. Hedger was inducted in a ceremony in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. earlier this month.

A replica of the Volkswagen “Light Bus,” an icon of the 1960s counterculture movement, is on display at the Saratoga Automobile Museum.
Dr. Bob Hieronimus painted the original Light Bus in 1969 for his friends in “Light,” a Baltimore-based rock band. However, the fame came later that year when the bus, a Volkswagen Type 2 van, appeared at the Woodstock Art and Music Fair.
“It became a symbol of the Woodstock Art and Music Fair and the greater generational call for peace, love and unity after a snapshot of the van by the Associated Press was widely circulated in newspapers and magazines across the country,” said Volkswagen in a statement. “The van even
appeared in the liner of the official Woodstock album.”

Tire Rack Street Survival program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum

Rain. Cold. Ideal conditions to coach 21 upstate New York teenagers through a Tire Rack Street Survival program at the Saratoga Automobile Museum on Sunday, the 23rd of April, 2023.
Led by the Mohawk-Hudson Region SCCA, the day-long exercises in the classroom, and out on the adjoining Saratoga Performing Arts Center parking lot, were run by a team that also included the Patroon Chapter - BMW Car Club of America, and staff of the Museum.
Milton Fire District Number 1 added an extra challenge to the students. One-half of the skid pad was made even slipperier by high-volume water sprayed from a regulation fire hose. For the students, it was no different from driving up and down the nearby Northway (I-87) on the way to school, work, and shopping that is a way of life on the edge of the Adirondacks.
The constant downpour did not dampen the enthusiasm of parents and students alike who stood in line to see for themselves what a semi-driver sees from the cab, or doesn’t see, in the mirrors or even over the hood in front. That demonstration was followed by an airbag detonation (actually two) that provided graphic evidence as to why one should keep one’s driving hands at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions. And why a passenger should never ride with their feet on the dashboard!
The only TRSS program activity that was truly dampened was the traditional class picture. What with that exercise moved indoors at day’s end, rather than during a sunny lunchtime, it was ‘herding cats” to get most of the students in camera range as they and their parents started to head for dry homes.
As always, TRSS staff and instructors gathered together to swap stories of how their students had gone from timidity to confidence as the day progressed. It’s always a toss-up as to who gets more out of the TRSS experience. The students, or is it the instructors?
An exclusive first look: Bond vehicles on display at Saratoga Auto Museum
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Saratoga Automobile Museum is racing into its newest and quite possibly most exciting exhibit to date. Its name’s Bond, Bond in Motion, and NEWS10 is getting a first look at the top-secret installment.
“Every car and prop you see was in a movie or used in a movie,” said Zach Skowronek, communications manager for the museum. “Car person or not car person, it’s just really cool to come in here and see.”
Every car curated was rolled in straight from the bond production company or the Ian Fleming foundation. The vehicles span every bond era, from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. The versatile displays include souped-up Aston Martins and BMWs to submarines and a jet pack.
“We have a DB 10 which was in the movie Spectre that was specifically made for the Bond franchise by Aston Martin,” said Skowronek. “There’s only 10 of them.” “The Aston Martin DB 5, this specific car was actually seen in five movies.”
Curators hope the exhibit will immerse visitors in movie magic.
“We’re hoping to make it kind of look like a Hollywood production as you walk in,” said Skowronek. They also hope Bond’s vehicles will boost admissions. “This can really draw a bigger audience in terms of moviegoers, bond fans and we’re looking to really see a new customer base.”
Bond In Motion opens to Auto Museum members on November 17 and to the public the very next day. Just like the movie franchise, curators think the exhibit will be around for a long time.
Lost Speedways Returns for 2022
With the end of another racing season on the horizon, attention is turning to off-season activities. And at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, nothing is more popular than the “Saturday after Thanksgiving” Lost Speedways program.
“We came back strong last November after losing a year to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said event organizer Ron Hedger. “But this year will rank among our best programs ever as we look at a wide swath of the past as well as peer into the future.”
Opening the program will be the always popular “Motorcycle Guy,” Mark Supley. But for 2022 his focus will change, as he has also begun restoring Soap Box Derby cars and researching past activities in the region.
Next up will be Mike Zagata, who will take listeners back to the glory days of the old Fonda Speedway Drag Strip with assistance from photographer Frank Simek, who pulled a treasure trove of old photos from his archives to illustrate Zagata’s presentation. The photos run from Zagata’s personal cars to shots of NHRA superstar Shirley ‘Cha Cha’ Muldowney’s early days to some amazing home built creations.
Following intermission, attention will turn to the future with interviews of two of the regions up and coming stars, Jack Lehner and Jack Speshock. Both are favorites at the nearby Albany-Saratoga Speedway, especially with younger fans, and current plans are for their cars to be on display as well.
“We want people to know that Lost Speedways isn’t only for ‘old guys,’ said Hedger. “The two Jack’s represent the future of area racing, as many of the current favorites are edging towards retirement. And they have a different view of the sport as well, as to them the ‘old days’ are ten years ago, not 50 or 75.”
The final segment of Lost Speedways 2022 will look back on Fifty Years of Super DIRT Week with a panel of SDW winners. Rob Yetman has won at both Syracuse and Oswego in the Pro Stocks, Rocky Warner has been to Syracuse’s Victory Lane in both the Pro Stocks and Sportsman races and Kenny Tremont Jr won both the 358 modified and big block 200 races on the historic Syracuse mile.
“I hope to have another big favorite from the Syracuse days join the panel as well,” added Hedger. “When everything is in place, we’ll announce his name along with further details on the day’s events. In the meantime, fans should mark November 26th on their calendar with a big star.”
Attendees will also appreciate seeing a great addition to the Racing in New York gallery, the offset supermodified that the legendary Nolan Swift drove from two laps down to win the International Classic at Oswego Speedway. Lovingly restored by master craftsman Steve Miller of Mexico, NY, the car will move to Saratoga after completion of its summer/early fall outdoor display schedule.

Try to set your kids up for success so everyone can have fun.
