Mercedes Benz 1886-2026 Opening May 4, 2026
The Saratoga Automobile Museum proudly announces its next major feature exhibition, Mercedes Benz 1886-2026, debuting May 4, 2026. Spanning 140 years of engineering achievement, design excellence, and motorsport dominance, the exhibition traces the remarkable evolution of one of the most influential marques in automotive history, from the invention of the automobile to modern performance icons.
The exhibition begins with the 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen, recognized as the first practical automobile and the foundation of the modern automotive age. Landmark vehicles throughout the gallery include the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K, a prewar grand touring masterpiece; the 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet, representing postwar craftsmanship and renewal; and the iconic 1955 300SL Gullwing, whose distinctive doors and pioneering engineering redefined sports car performance. Artistic expression is represented through the 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220A painted by internationally acclaimed artist Hiro Yamagata, while motorsport heritage is embodied in the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, a homologation legend born from international touring car competition. Together with many additional significant automobiles, the exhibition presents a sweeping view of Mercedes-Benz innovation, design, and cultural influence.
Complementing the historic vehicles, famed global artist Lyn Hiner is completing ten original Mercedes Benz paintings created specifically for this exhibition. Her works will be displayed alongside the automobiles, offering a contemporary artistic interpretation of the brand’s enduring design language and 140-year legacy.
Mercedes Benz 1886-2026 opens to the public on May 4, 2026 at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, located in the historic Saratoga Spa State Park. An exhibition opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Museum members are admitted free of charge. A gallery talk will begin at 6:00 PM. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.
