This 1967 Firebird is a rare “Early Bird” one of the very first examples built on the inaugural day of production. Number 187 off the assembly line it was completed before lunchtime on that first day placing it among the earliest Firebirds ever produced. As one of the first cars to wear the name it represents Pontiac’s bold entry into the growing pony car segment.
The first-generation Firebird introduced a sleek and athletic design with a long hood short rear deck and distinctive split grille styling. Inside the car featured an aeronautical-inspired cockpit with bright metal trim toggle-style switches and a driver-focused layout that reflected Pontiac’s performance-oriented identity.
This example is powered by a 400-cubic-inch V8 with a 4-speed manual transmission and 355 Posi-traction rear end. It is equipped with a factory hood-mounted tachometer Rally I wheels and chrome exhaust tips. Finished in black with a red interior this car is particularly significant—black was not a standard production color in 1967 and had to be specially ordered. As such this may be the very first black Firebird ever built making it a unique and historically important “Black Bird” from Pontiac’s first day of Firebird production.
