SAM Summer Gala

CELEBRITY PANEL TO HONOR SAM POSEY AT SARATOGA AUTOMOBILE MUSEUM’S JUNE GALA

Saratoga Springs, NY The June opening of the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s new Golub Gallery exhibit, “POSEY: Shifting Through the Creative Life of Sam Posey,” will be highlighted by a celebrity panel’s discussion of his multi-faceted career during the Museum’s annual gala, set for Friday, June 24 at the museum.

Posey will be on hand along with a distinguished panel slated to honor their longtime friend, famed racer, author, broadcaster, architect, and painter. The panel will include Frank Stella, iconic figure of Post-War American art, Skip Barber, renowned former racer and Lime Rock Park owner, Bill Warner, founder and chairman of the famed Amelia Island Concours, Luigi Chinetti Jr., scion of the oldest Ferrari importer in America, and Archie Urciuoli, a longtime sports car racer, author of children’s books and former chairman of Merrill Lynch International.

A resident of nearby Sharon, CT, Posey has had a fabulous and varied career that took him from entry level racing at Lime Rock Park to driving Formula One in the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of LeMans. Following his retirement from competition, Posey returned to Indianapolis as a broadcaster for ABC, a career that would later bring him an Emmy for Best Writing in recognition of his observations on a number of events, including Alaska’s iconic Iditarod sled dog race.

In recent years, Posey has become equally as well known for his architectural designs, his paintings and his devotion to model trains, which resulted in a very popular book on the subject.

"Anyone who has read Sam's wonderful book "The Mudge Pond Express" knows the key role a slot car racing set played in the awakening of a shy, admittedly nonathletic kid whose whole world changed when he discovered something he was not only fascinated by, but very good at,” summed up Bob Varsha, veteran TV personality and longtime friend . “That talent and confidence led to a driving career at tracks from his beloved Lime Rock Park to Indianapolis and Le Mans. Away from the circuits his intelligence and sense of style was on display in his prolific work as an artist and architect, while his communication skills gave birth to yet another career as a writer and broadcaster, a small corner of his amazing life I was lucky enough to share. Sam is simply one of the most accomplished people I have ever met, and I look forward to sharing him with the audience at the Saratoga Auto Museum in June."

Lost Speedways

SLATE SET FOR POPULAR “LOST SPEEDWAYS” PROGRAM IN NOVEMBER

Saratoga Springs, NY      With Labor Day in the books and a hint of fall in the air, it’s time to set the slate of topics and presenters for the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s most popular event, Lost Speedways.

“We’ll welcome racers and fans on our traditional ‘Saturday after Thanksgiving’ date once again, which this year falls on November 28th,” said event organizer Ron Hedger. “And like always, we’ll have memorabilia on display along with a great slate of presentations as we look back at speedways and racers no longer with us.”

Mark Supley, Lost Speedway’s motorcycle expert, will discuss board track racing, a topic he addressed a few years ago but has since expanded. Vermont racing historian Bill Ladabouche will cover the old Otter Creek Speedway in Vergennes, where many New Yorkers raced back in the day, while Ken Parrotte will take the audience back to the early days of the Fulton Speedway, when Millard “Bub” Benway and his brother first opened it under the name Mil-Ray Speedway.

For sports car and road racing fans, Lime Rock Park announcer and racing historian Greg Rickes has researched the famed street race through Alexandria Bay and will share his findings. And for dirt track fans, racing columnist John Snyder, who made his Lost Speedways debut last fall, will return to talk about Victory Speedway, the original name of the track now known as the Orange County Fairgrounds Speedway.

“The final segment will be our now traditional interview session,” added Hedger. “Each year I invite one or two star drivers to talk about their careers and this year I’m hoping to have a pair from different backgrounds to answer both my questions and queries from the audience. As the event gets closer and possible conflicts are resolved, we’ll be able to announce their names.”

Another Lost Speedways tradition is that the event closely follows the opening of the museum’s winter exhibit, which will be “Real Steel: Stories of Automotive Archaeology from Kevin Biebel.” While Biebel’s collection runs from a 1907 Success that looks like a buckboard with an engine to modern vehicles, racers will likely be most interested in his Kent Fuller built dragster, complete with Ford flathead engine and Hilborn fuel injection, which remains just as it came off the drag strip decades ago.

And for those who have enjoyed viewing the #2x modified coupe driven by the legendary Eddie Flemke, the car’s owner, Long island collector Phil Elliston, has agreed to replace it with another historic treasure, the #888 wheeled by four-time national champion Rene Charland. The ‘triple 8’ will arrive in early October to allow time for items from SAM’s extensive collection of Charland memorabilia to be displayed with it at Lost Speedways.

Lost Speedways 2015 will commence with memorabilia sharing from 11:30 am on, followed by the presentations at 12:45 pm.

The Saratoga Automobile Museum is located on the Avenue of the Pines in the Saratoga Spa State Park, just off Exit 13N of I-87, the Adirondack Northway. More information on SAM is available online at www.saratogaautomuseum.org.

Exhibition Opening! November, Friday the 13th 6-8PM

Please join us for our feature exhibit opening Real Steel! We will be providing light-fare and passed o'dourves.

Real Steel: Stories of Automotive Archeology!

Kevin Biebel is not like other car collectors. He's never been hung up on "bright and shiny". Instead, he has had a lifelong interest in the stories behind particular cars and the related artifacts that bring those stories to life. In short, those who do not know Kevin might call him a collector. But to those who do, he is nothing short of an automotive archaeologist.

Street Survival Driving Program

Real world. Hands on.

When your teen driver attends a Street Survival school, we teach them to control your car in unpredictable situations based on its handling limits. They master the application of driving physics using their car. They learn how to make good driving decisions and react more quickly. They become more aware and learn how to begin anticipating the actions of other drivers.

Saturday, October10th, 8:00AM-4:00PM

The primary emphasis of the Tire Rack Street Survival® is a "hands-on" driving experience in real-world situations! We use your own car to teach you about its handling limits and how you can control them. The students will become more observant of the traffic situation they find themselves in. They will learn to look far enough ahead to anticipate unwise actions of other drivers. As the students master the application of physics to drive their cars, they will make fewer unwise driving actions themselves. They will understand why they should always wear their own seatbelts, and why they should insist that their passengers wear seatbelts, too.

It's about more than driving - it's about LIVING!

All Schools $75.

See our FAQ page at: www.streetsurvival.org/frequently-asked-questions.php

"We were very impressed with how [John's] driving skills improved in one day last year. His college doesn't allow freshmen or sophomores living on campus to have a car so he isn't driving for most of nine months. We are bringing him home for this school, then back to college for a few weeks before summer break. Next term the car goes to college too."
